Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter

2 cups packed brown sugar

1 cup light corn syrup

1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

Optional: sea salt flakes for topping

Instructions

In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.

Once the butter is melted, add the brown sugar and corn syrup. Stir until well combined and the mixture is smooth.

Gradually pour in the sweetened condensed milk while stirring continuously to avoid any lumps.

Keep cooking over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture comes to a gentle boil.

Reduce the heat slightly and continue to cook, stirring constantly, for about 8-10 minutes until the caramel thickens and reaches a temperature of 245°F (118°C) on a candy thermometer.

Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt until fully incorporated.

Pour the caramel into a greased 9x9 inch baking dish or lined with parchment paper for easy removal.

If desired, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt flakes on top of the caramel for added flavor.

Allow the caramel to cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for about 2 hours until set.

Once set, cut into squares and enjoy your delicious homemade Amish caramel!
