At the heart of the Breakfast Braid lies the star ingredient: puff pastry. This flaky, buttery pastry is known for its light and airy texture, which is achieved through a unique baking method that involves layering dough and butter. Each layer puffs up when baked, creating a delightful contrast between crispy outer layers and a tender interior.

Ingredients

1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed

4 large eggs, beaten

1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)

1 cup cooked and crumbled breakfast sausage or diced ham

1 cup fresh spinach, chopped

¼ cup diced bell pepper (any color)

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

1 egg (for egg wash)

Fresh herbs for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to smooth it out.

Cut slits about 1 inch apart on the long sides of the pastry, leaving the center third of the pastry intact.

In a mixing bowl, combine the beaten eggs, shredded cheese, cooked sausage or ham, chopped spinach, diced bell pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.

Pour the egg mixture into the center portion of the pastry, spreading it evenly.

Starting from the top, fold over the strips of pastry, alternating sides, to create a braided effect over the filling. Continue until all strips are folded over and the filling is enclosed.

Beat the additional egg in a small bowl and brush it over the top of the braided pastry for a golden finish.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and puffed up.

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

Serve warm and enjoy your delicious Breakfast Braid!
