Ingredients

4 small yellow onions

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Cooking spray

Instructions

Prep the Onions: Start by trimming the top of each onion and peeling off the skin. Carefully cut a deep X shape in the top of each onion (without cutting all the way through) to create the 'blooming' effect. Soak the onions in a bowl of buttermilk for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and add flavor.

Prepare the Coating: In another bowl, mix the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.

Coat the Onions: After soaking, remove the onions from the buttermilk and let any excess liquid drip off. Then, generously coat each onion in the flour mixture, ensuring all cuts and the entire surface is well covered. You may need to press the flour mixture gently into the onion to ensure proper adhesion.

Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.

Air Fry the Onions: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Place the coated onions in the basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded. You may need to fry them in batches depending on the size of your air fryer. Lightly spray the tops of the onions with cooking spray for extra crispiness.

Cooking Time: Air fry the onions for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Check halfway through the cooking time and give the basket a gentle shake for even cooking.

Serving: Once crispy and golden, remove the mini blooming onions from the air fryer and let them cool for a couple of minutes. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce such as ranch or spicy mayo.
