Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (or a mix of beef and lamb)

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat)

1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro

1/4 cup finely chopped fresh mint

1 small onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 large egg

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes, with juices

1/2 cup chicken broth

1/4 cup honey

1 tablespoon harissa paste (adjust to taste for spice level)

1/4 cup raisins or chopped dried apricots (optional)

1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

Prepare the Meatball Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef (or lamb), breadcrumbs, cilantro, mint, onion, garlic, egg, cumin, cinnamon, smoked paprika, ginger, salt, and pepper. Mix well until fully combined.

Form the Meatballs: Scoop about 1-2 tablespoons of the meat mixture and roll into balls (about 1 inch in diameter). This should yield around 24 meatballs.

Brown the Meatballs (optional): In a skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil. Brown the meatballs on all sides for extra flavor (about 3-4 minutes). This step is optional but recommended for enhanced taste.

Create the Sauce: In the crockpot, add the diced tomatoes, chicken broth, honey, harissa paste, and raisins or dried apricots (if using). Stir to combine all the ingredients.

Add the Meatballs: Gently place the cooked (or raw, if you skipped browning) meatballs into the sauce in the crockpot. Make sure they are well-coated with the sauce.

Cook: Cover and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours or on high heat for 3-4 hours, until the meatballs are fully cooked through and tender.

Serve: Once cooked, serve the Moroccan meatballs over couscous or rice, garnished with additional fresh herbs if desired. You can also serve with yogurt on the side for a cooling effect.

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 6-8 hours cooking | Servings: 4-6
