Ingredients

2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened (2 sticks)

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

½ tablespoon almond extract (optional)

1 cup royal icing (for decoration, optional)

Colored sprinkles or edible glitter (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).

Add Egg and Extracts: Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) until well combined.

Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Don't overmix!

Chill the Dough: Divide the dough into two equal portions, shape into disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until firm.

Roll Out and Cut: On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disk of dough to about ¼ inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out your desired shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheets.

Bake Cookies: Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just golden. Remove from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Decorate (Optional): Once cooled, decorate with royal icing and sprinkles as desired. Let the icing set before serving.

Enjoy: Indulge in your delightful cut-out sugar cookies with friends and family!
