  • cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • a pinch salt
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or semi-sweet chocolate chips
