Ingredients

500g ground beef or lamb

1 large onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 green bell pepper, finely chopped

2 medium tomatoes, diced

1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)

Salt and black pepper to taste

4 large pita breads

4 tablespoons olive oil

Lemon wedges and yogurt (for serving, optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef or lamb with the chopped onion, minced garlic, green bell pepper, diced tomatoes, and parsley. Add the cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together thoroughly until well combined.

Assemble Hawawshi: Take one pita bread and carefully open it to create a pocket. Stuff the pocket generously with the meat filling, ensuring it's evenly distributed. Press the edges slightly to seal. Repeat with the remaining pita breads and filling.

Grill or Bake: Preheat your grill or oven to 200°C (400°F). If grilling, lightly brush each stuffed pita with olive oil. Place on the grill and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and the meat is cooked through. If baking, place the stuffed pitas on a baking sheet, brush with olive oil, and bake for about 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through.

Serve & Enjoy: Once done, remove from heat and let cool for a couple of minutes. Cut in half to reveal the flavorful filling and serve hot with lemon wedges and yogurt on the side.
