Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1 tsp sugar

3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)

1/2 tsp salt

2 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp garlic powder (optional)

1 tsp dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil, thyme)

1 egg (for egg wash)

Coarse sea salt and grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, mix flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Add garlic powder and herbs if using. Stir until a rough dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.

Let it Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

Shape the Breadsticks: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin rope (about 12-14 inches). Form a heart shape by curling the ends inward and twisting them to form the top points.

Prepare for Baking: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the shaped breadsticks on a lined baking sheet. Beat the egg and brush it over the breadsticks for a golden crust. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt and grated Parmesan.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.

Garnish and Serve: Allow the breadsticks to cool slightly. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving. Serve warm with marinara sauce or herbed olive oil for dipping.

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes | Servings: 8 breadsticks
