Ingredients

For the Dough:

4 cups all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup whole milk, warmed

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1 large egg

For the Filling:

2 large apples, peeled and diced (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

4 oz cream cheese, softened

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup powdered sugar

1-2 tablespoons milk (to consistency)

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy. Add sugar, melted butter, and egg; mix well. Gradually incorporate flour and salt until dough begins to form. Knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Prepare the Filling: In a medium bowl, toss diced apples with lemon juice. In a separate small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Combine both to create a sweet apple filling.

Roll Out Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle (about 1/4 inch thick).

Assemble Rolls: Spread softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the apple filling evenly on top. Roll the dough tightly from one long end to the other, pinching seams to seal.

Cut Rolls: Slice the rolled dough into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased baking dish, leaving a little space between each roll. Cover with a cloth and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.

Preheat and Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Make the Frosting: While the rolls are baking, beat cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Add vanilla and powdered sugar, mixing until creamy. Adjust consistency with milk if necessary.

Frost and Serve: Once the rolls are baked, let them cool for about 10 minutes and then spread the cream cheese frosting generously on top. Serve warm and enjoy!
