Ingredients

For the Orange Topping:

2 large oranges, thinly sliced

1/4 cup unsalted butter

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cake Batter:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 large eggs

1/2 cup whole milk

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

Zest of 1 orange

1 teaspoon almond extract

Instructions

Prepare the Orange Topping: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/4 cup of unsalted butter. Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar and stir until well combined and bubbling, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into a greased 9-inch round cake pan.

Arrange Oranges: Carefully arrange the thinly sliced oranges in a single layer on top of the brown sugar mixture, allowing them to overlap slightly. Set aside.

Mix the Cake Batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup of softened butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs, mixing well after each addition.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter-sugar mixture.

Add Milk and Flavor: Pour in 1/2 cup of whole milk, the zest of 1 orange, and 1 teaspoon of almond extract. Mix until just combined and smooth.

Bake the Cake: Pour the cake batter over the arranged oranges in the pan, gently smoothing the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and Flip: Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Gently run a knife around the edges to loosen, then invert the cake onto a serving plate, giving it a gentle shake to release.

Serve: Allow the cake to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
