Ingredients

1 loaf of French bread (about 1 pound), cut into 1-inch slices

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup granulated sugar, divided

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon almond extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup brown sugar

Fresh berries and whipped cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: Layer the sliced French bread in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, standing the slices upright and tightly packed.

Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, vanilla extract, almond extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.

Combine and Soak: Pour the custard mixture over the bread slices, ensuring that every piece is well-coated. Use your hands to gently press the bread down into the mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours).

Preheat Oven: In the morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake the French Toast: Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top of the bread. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and set.

Brûlée the Top: Once out of the oven, turn on your broiler. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of granulated sugar over the top of the baked French toast. Place under the broiler for 1-3 minutes, watching closely, until the sugar caramelizes and forms a crispy, brûléed topping.

Serve: Allow the dish to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with fresh berries and whipped cream if desired.
