Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup maple syrup (plus extra for serving)

1 cup fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)

Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed brioche or challah bread. Place the bread in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.

    Make the Custard: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.

      Combine: Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are well-coated. Gently press down the bread to soak in the custard.

        Add Maple Syrup & Berries: Drizzle the maple syrup over the top of the casserole. Scatter the fresh berries throughout for added flavor and color.

          Cover and Refrigerate: Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, and refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours) to allow the bread to absorb the custard.

            Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) the next morning. Remove the cover from the baking dish and bake for 45-50 minutes or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown on top, and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

              Cool and Serve: Allow the casserole to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired, and serve warm with extra maple syrup and a sprinkle of fresh berries.
