Ingredients

  • 4 large russet potatoes peeled and sliced thinly
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese grated
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter divided
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg optional
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley chopped

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat, add onion and sauté until soft, then add garlic and cook for another minute.
  • In a bowl, whisk together heavy cream, whole milk, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg until smooth.
  • Spread half of the sliced potatoes in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Layer half of the sautéed onion and garlic mixture over the potatoes, followed by half of the cheddar cheese.
  • Drizzle half of the milk mixture over the layers and repeat with remaining ingredients.
  • Dot the top with remaining butter pieces.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes until potatoes are tender and top is golden.
  • Let cool for 10 minutes before serving and garnish with parsley.
