Ingredients

  • 8 oz elbow macaroni
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • ½ lb Italian sausage casings removed
  • 1 red bell pepper diced
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs optional for a crunchy topping

Instructions

  • Cook the elbow macaroni according to the package instructions, then drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, heat over medium heat and add the Italian sausage, breaking it apart as it cooks until browned.
  • Add the diced red and green bell peppers to the skillet and sauté for about 5 minutes until tender.
  • In a separate saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat, then add the milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Whisk in the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses until melted and creamy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni, sausage, and bell peppers, then pour the cheese sauce over and stir to coat.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish and sprinkle breadcrumbs on top if desired.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is bubbly and golden brown.
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes
