Ingredients

12 Sweet Hawaiian rolls, cut into quarters

6 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

½ cup heavy cream

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup crushed pineapple, drained (optional)

1/2 cup shredded coconut (optional)

Powdered sugar, for dusting

Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

Layer the Rolls: Place the cut Hawaiian rolls in the baking dish, ensuring they are spread evenly. If using, sprinkle the crushed pineapple and shredded coconut evenly over the top of the rolls.

Make the Custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined and the sugar is dissolved.

Combine: Pour the egg mixture over the Hawaiian rolls, gently pressing down to ensure all pieces are soaked in the custard.

Chill (Optional): For best results, cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if time allows. This helps the rolls absorb the custard thoroughly.

Bake: If refrigerated, bring the dish to room temperature before baking. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.

Serve: Allow the bake to cool for a few minutes. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup drizzled over the top.
