Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

For the Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.

    Prepare the Brownie Layer:

      - In a medium saucepan, melt the 1/2 cup of butter over low heat. Once melted, add 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips, stirring until smooth and combined.

        - Remove from heat and mix in the granulated sugar. Allow to cool slightly, then add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

          - In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually fold the dry mixture into the wet mixture until just combined. If using, fold in the nuts. Set aside.

            Prepare the Cookie Layer:

              - In a large bowl, beat together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

                - Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.

                  - In another bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Finally, fold in the remaining 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips.

                    Layering the Browkies:

                      - Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Gently dollop spoonfuls of the cookie dough over the brownie layer. Use a knife or a spatula to swirl the cookie dough into the brownie batter slightly, creating a marbled effect.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter). Be careful not to overbake for that fudgy texture.

Cool and Serve: Allow the browkies to cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 15-20 minutes. Lift them out using the parchment paper, then cool completely before cutting into squares and serving.

Enjoy your decadent browkies with a glass of milk or a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
