Ingredients

  • 12 pieces lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 30 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 12 oz tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • to taste fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, combine ground beef and Italian sausage, cooking until browned and draining excess fat.
  • Add diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet, sautéing until the onion is translucent.
  • Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper, and let simmer for 20 minutes.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper until smooth.
  • In a baking dish, layer meat sauce, 4 noodles, half of the ricotta mixture, one-third of the mozzarella, and a sprinkle of Parmesan.
  • Repeat the layering process with remaining ingredients.
  • For the final layer, place the last noodles, cover with meat sauce, and top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes, then remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until bubbly.
